The importance of reflective practice

Reflective practice is essential in Occupational Therapy, enabling professionals to continually evaluate, analyse and improve the quality and safety of the care they provide. By taking time to critically reflect on actions, decisions and interactions it allows clinicians to identify strengths, recognise areas for development and adapt approaches to better meet service users needs. It also supports ongoing professional growth, integrating new evidence, refining clinical reasoning and strengthening self awareness.

Safer Practice

Reflection enables safer practice by critically examining decisions, recognising gaps in knowledge and adapting approaches to mitigate future risks. This strengthens clinical judgement, improves consistency and ensures care remains evidence-based, person-centred and adaptively responsive.

Ongoing Learning and CPD

Reflections support ongoing learning and CPD, allowing practitioners to evaluate performance, identify development needs, integrate new evidence and refine clinical reasoning. This self-reflection strengthens competence, enhances adaptability and ensures engagement in effective ongoing professional development.

Professional Identity

Reflection allows professionals to evaluate their individual role and responsibilities, shaping their beliefs, behaviours and professional values within OT. This further fosters confidence, accountability and a clear sense of identity within the profession, essential for effective, person-centred practice.
